The Barcelona chair is an iconic piece of furniture from the 20th century, which is the hallmark of the world—famous furniture manufacturer Knoll. The model was created in 1929 by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to decorate the German pavilion at the International Exhibition in Spain. The chair was named «Barcelona» in honor of the city where the exhibition was held.
Being an adherent of the Bauhaus school, Mies van der Rohe created a modernist armchair that was supposed to combine the minimalism and practicality characteristic of the Bauhaus with comfort and luxury worthy of monarchs (the Spanish royal couple was to visit the pavilion).
Unlike the first original products, the pigskin upholstery has now been replaced with calfskin, and the frame, which was originally bolted together, has been replaced with a solid structure using modern seamless welding technology. Each chair is handmade from premium materials, which is confirmed by the special signature of Mies van der Rohe, engraved on the frame.
